Corporate Immigration - USA

The Department of State (DOS) recently requested 200 additional workers for its Louisiana and New Hampshire offices. Officials say that these employees, who will be transferred from other positions with the DOS, will help process the large backlog of passport applications. This need for additional workers has been fuelled by recent legislation that requires US citizens flying to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean to have passports to return to the United States.

The new law, which came into effect in January, has caused an increase in the number of passport applications. It is expected that 18 million passport requests in total will be made during 2007; in 2006 that number totalled about 12 million.

The DOS published information in early June informing the public that it had a backlog of 500,000 passport applications. It has eased restrictions since June, allowing US citizens flying in the western hemisphere to use identification and proof issued by the DOS that they have applied for passports to re-enter the nation.
